Lyrics Analysis

When researching about the lyrics and meaning of the song we found it extremely hard. We found many different things that linked to the song in many ways.

Firstly, a book written by John Steinbeck called East Of Eden. Secondly, that there is a biblical reference to the title of the songs of ‘sin and innocence’.
Lastly, a film starring James Dean also called ‘East of Eden’. We feel that the meaning of the song changes weather you link it to any of these point.

We think that the chorus links to trying to escape and conforming to the rules of society. The lyrics show that she doesn't want to be trapped anymore and that she just wants to be freed from the rules of society. In the song we feel that she wants to find Eden; Paradise. The chorus also links to Steinbeck's book with the quotation "the free, roaming mind being perused, roped blunted, drugged."

The repetition of lines through out the song can be used to show desperation to find freedom. There are also sexual links throughout the song, for example, "unbuttoned down the middle".
